Deputy Sheriff Position:

‍ ‍

The Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the position of Patrol Deputy. Duties will include law enforcement, service of criminal and civil process and court operations.

Applicants must:‍ ‍

-Be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving history

-Have a minimum education of high school diploma or equivalent

-Be able to pass a physical agility test

-Be able to pass a written examination

-Have a desire to help and be part of a tight-knit rural community

-Be service-minded

-Be willing to work shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays

A criminal history will be obtained on each applicant.

Prior law enforcement experience is preferred but not required.

Full pay during your academy training.

Take-home cars are available for those living within 10 miles of a Northumberland County line and on the Northern Neck peninsula.

The minimum starting salary is $52,000. (full-time) Negotiable with previous Law Enforcement experience

Essential Functions:‍ ‍

  • Patrols an assigned area and detects violations of traffic and criminal law   and suspicious activity.

  • Responds to radio calls for service.

  • Serves warrants and makes arrests.

  • Handles domestic disturbances and a variety of citizen complaints.

  • Directs traffic as necessary.

  • Investigates automobile accidents and assists disabled motorists.

  • Conducts criminal investigations.

  • Testifies in court.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Court Bailiff Position

Available positions: Part-Time (Multiple)

The Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the position of Court Bailiff. Duties will include

Effectively communicate with all people.

Work when assigned.

Checks the courtroom for security and cleanliness.

Assures the availability of sundry supplies for the use of the Judge and or Clerk.

Checks baggage, papers, and persons entering the courthouse for weapons or other

unauthorized items.

Enforces courtroom rules of behavior.

Provides jury escort to other areas outside of the courtroom to prevent jury contact with

public.

Guard lodging of sequestered jury.

Responsible for the security of prisoners in custody.

Serve arrest warrants, civil papers.

Transport prisoners and mental patients using necessary restraints.

Serve as a court bailiff and court security.

Uses firearms proficiently as required in the certification standards on all firearms issued

and approved.

-Be Virginia DCJS certified in either Law-Enforcement or Jail Basic

-Be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving history

-Have a minimum education of a high school diploma or equivalent

-Be service-minded
