What are the sheriff's office hours?
--While the Administrative Office is open Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 4:30, deputies and dispatchers are on duty 24 hours daily to serve you.
I was recently involved in an auto accident. Where can I obtain a copy of the police report for my insurance company?
--The Administrative Office staff handles all accident report requests. Call 580-5221. If your accident was handled by Virginia State Police you would need to contact their dispatch center at 804-333-3800. There is an $8.00 cash-only fee for VSP reports.
How do get a Protective Order?
-- In order to obtain a protective order, you need to see a Magistrate; this also requires a deputy. Magistrates are available 24hrs a day by video conferencing. The Commonwealth of Virginia permits a petitioner to visit any Sheriff's office in Virginia to obtain a protective order.. It is recommended that you call the Northumberland Sheriff's Office to arrange a time to meet with a deputy and to sit before the magistrate; this will eliminate unnecessary wait times for a petitioner. If you prefer to see a Magistrate in person, the Communications Officer can also provide you with the location of a Magistrate by telephoning 580-5221
What if I need to call the sheriff's office but it's not an emergency?
--All Sheriff's Office calls are important, but if your call is not an emergency, please dial 580-5221.
911 should only be used for calls in which a unit must be dispatched immediately in order to preserve and protect life or property.
What if I need a Criminal Background Check or Fingerprints?
--Fingerprints and background checks may be required for a number of reasons, including employment and emergency child placement. All fingerprint appointments should be scheduled through the Administrative Division, by calling 580-5221 during normal business hours. Be sure to bring a photo ID and your fingerprint card if provided to you.
How can I file a grievance or make a commendation or complaint against a Sheriff's Office employee?
--Anyone can file a commendation or complaint against Sheriff's Office personnel at anytime. Complaints must be documented on a "CONFIDENTIAL REPORT OF COMPLAINT" form which can be obtained in person at Northumberland County Sheriff's Office. Grievances will be investigated by the Sheriff and/or appropriate Supervisor.

(Doc) Lyons, at PO BOX 310, Heathsville Va 22473 For Commendations, please explain the specific action or actions of the Officer or the Department which merits acknowledgment. Your letter will be forwarded to the respective Supervisor and Sheriff.
