How do I obtain or renew my Concealed Weapons Permit?
Answer:
APPLICATION: Permanent residents of Northumberland County who are over the age of 21 may apply for a concealed handgun permit by completing an application obtained from the Northumberland County Circuit Court Clerk's Office. The completed application must be signed under oath in the presence of the clerk or deputy clerk of the Circuit Court. Non-resident concealed handgun permit applications are filed with the Virginia State Police.
FEE (Non-refundable): Application for new permit $25.00; Application to renew existing permit $25.00. Checks payable to the Northumberland Circuit Court are accepted.
PROOF OF COMPETENCY: Proof of competency to carry a handgun is required.
CRIMINAL HISTORY: Northumberland County requires a criminal record search by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
ISSUANCE: The concealed handgun permit is issued within 45 days of the date the complete application is submitted to the Clerk for processing. If after the permit is issued, the criminal record search reveals that the applicant is disqualified, the permit is subject to revocation.
LOST PERMITS: There is a $5.00 fee to replace a lost or worn permit. $10.00 for a change of address.
RENEWAL: Applications for permit renewal may be submitted at least 6 months prior to expiration of the current permit.
